catbird: Access to technology ≠ access to actual creative skill - marathonpacks Eric Harvey is totally right on. I have so much animosity for tech people who get all excited about technology, but seem entirely indifferent to the quality of art. It’s just a lot of assholes eager to bury the signal amid unprecedented levels of noise, because “yay democratization!” is a convenient way of putting a...

How to register for Japanese video site Nico Nico... →
Useful! Nico Nico Douga looks pretty interesting — it’s a video site that lets users overlay text onto the clips — and apparently it’s the 7th most popular website in Japan. I really love the random black-and-white doodle animations in the nav bar.

allez-allez: wide open spaces →
Wonderful, as always.  Spacy, ambient, driving, and warm.  I’ll be searching out this Supermayer mix of Hot Chip’s “One Pure Thought” now.  The original of that tune is totally blinding too, and very much worth checking out.

Bummer / Anti-Bummer
BUMMER: I sent the “My New Haircut” YouTube meme to one of my new favorite blogs, Sociological Images, and they posted it here. Nice to read their commentary, as always. The meme itself is really kind of depressing, not unlike this other video over here. (Related: I am now officially not into Queens of the Stone Age.) All of these videos (and attendant comments) showcase mobs of...

Pitchfork: R. Kelly Not Guilty!!!! →
Um, wait a second. All those exclamation points? Really? We’re talking about a trial involving grown men doing messed up things with little girls, right? Those exclamation points read like “HOORAY!!” and even if Kelly is innocent (I haven’t followed this trial at all, so I can’t comment there) they really just show a huge lack of respect and, you know, humanity. ...

Leon's Creation - This Is the Beginning →
“Leon’s Creation hail from San Francisco, they released this album on the small Studio 10 label. I think some people have a misconception that this is a funk record, I would classify it more as psychedelic soul ala Sly and the Family Stone. This is a fantastic record that has simply slipped through the cracks. Why this hasn’t been reissued yet is beyond me. Definitely one worth seeking out...

I've Got Bees In My Pants
Did you know that The Bees just released a mix album? Kind of makes sense doesn’t it? As marathonpacks rightly pointed out here, these guys pretty much do the band equivalent of DJing, selecting sounds and bands to mix and match in fun and highly enjoyable ways. And no, I did not say “reinterpret” — I’d say faithful and respectful replication is more the goal...

The Hype Cycle →
Short, sharp overview of hype as it pertains to mass taste, mostly in the musical sphere. I like the tone here: quick and direct, without the blahsiness that usually haunts writing (and there’s not enough of it) on this subject. It’s depressing to think that something so powerful and personal (art/music) can be so totally sucked dry, but somehow just calling out the process and being...

IDM Nostalgia Part 2: Ghosts in the Machine
Here’s me reviewing an old Mu-Ziq EP at age 18 (old enough to be embarrassing, rather than just cute) and sounding like a total nerd. Apparently 4 out of 5 internet people find it helpful though, so that’s something. Or is it. Still not convinced? Ladies and gentlemen: A History of Electronic Musical Instruments. Leo Theremin, we salute you!

Mrs Jynx - The Standoffish Cat →
I’m really loving this album right now. Very reminiscent of classic, melodic Mu-Ziq albums like In Pine Effect and Lunatic Harness, and released on Mike Paradinas’ (aka Mu-Ziq)’s label to boot. Makes me feel a bit like an old man listening to a tribute act and getting all nostalgic about my formative musical experiences (Lunatic Harness definitely being one of them), but...

No Age's Picks @ Rhapsody →
Some really wonderful music on here. Everytime I hear anything off Ram I immediately feel like listening to it on repeat for the rest of the week. Many other hits as well (Wire! Young Marble Giants!  Chairman of the Board!) and some stuff that’s new to me (this Dills song is awesome). In related news, I’m still loving my Rhapsody subscription. It’s like Soulseek without the...

perpetua: This post by Maura Johnston, along with the Coolfer post she is quoting and commenting on, is essential reading, especially if you’re the type of chump who honestly believes the internet has had an entirely positive impact on your average touring band.
