Inside David Foster Wallace's Private Self-Help Library | The Awl →

In this way, Sally Foster Wallace and her son shared a sensibility so exactly alike that it seems to vibrate between them like a tuning fork.

This is sort of a random quote to excerpt here, but I’m trying to avoid spoilers, and it gives you a pretty good idea of the quality of the writing. This is a great, sad, thought-provoking read, with lots to say about depression, family, and being a person. Recommended.

Rands In Repose: A Hard Thing is Done by Figuring Out How to Start →

Beginning is a three-phrase commit: you’re either fretting about starting, you’re preparing to begin, or you’ve begun. It’s the middle state of preparation I want to explore, because it is during this time that we unnecessarily torture ourselves. We lie to ourselves about wasting time and beat ourselves up with guilt-laden words like procrastination, slacker, and lazy, and I believe we’re actually getting important work done.

This is one of the best things I’ve read about working.

Metronomy “The Look” (via youarelosttothesea)

Not super into the stop motion seagulls, but I can definitely get behind that gigantic organ thing. Metronomy is a band I’m always only kind of on the verge of actually, intentionally liking, but often enjoy in a passive, distracted way. Maybe this new album will be the kicker? I’m liking this song, but the jury remains out (and distracted).

Another Saul Bass design, this time for the immortal Big. Love the double underline treatment here.

These guys can do cute.  Also, I’m a sucker for nice looking objects on solid, brightly colored backgrounds.

Roman Flügel ”How To Spread Lies” (buy me)

Really lovely downtempo house stuff, discovered via this great Philip Sherburne mix.  Released on Dial, who also put out a great John Roberts album last year. Hoping to give that one a proper blog post soon.

Just discovered a new addition to the “places I need to see in person someday” list: The Wharton Esherick Museum in Paoli, PA.  The photo above shows one of the bedrooms, as photographed by Leslie Williamson. This one’s great as well.  You can read more on Mr. Esherick here, and check out Williamson’s new Handcrafted Modern book for more creative rooms.
