Dave Hendley, writer on Jamaican music and art director of many a CD re-issue for Trojan Records, charts his lifelong love affair with reggae.
Beyond a handful of names, such as Roy Tomlinson who designed the iconic, and much imitated, Studio 1 logo, the artists who gave Jamaican music such a strong visual identity remain largely anonymous. The casual disregard for design conventions alongside the bold use of colour, typography, and illustration give these graphics a vibrancy that is all too often lacking in our own contemporary imagery with its unhealthy obsession with computer generated perfection.
This is really wonderful.

CR Blog  » They Sell! We Buy!
Nice article on the recently departed Designers Republic. These guys pretty much ruled my world in the 90’s/early 00’s, based mostly on their excellent work for Warp. This stuff was my first real entry point into graphic design appreciation, so I’ll always owe them one for that. Weird how some of these images look really dated now, but seemed so crazy, bleeding-edge futuristic at the time. A lot of it still looks great though — the image above, the Warp 10 artwork, etc. They’ll be missed.

Following up on this post, I can now confirm that these do indeed look awesome. Just got my copy of the BT one, and it is a thing of truly great beauty. We got the red and white swirl vinyl color we were hoping for, and the sleeve is made of recycled old Sub Pop posters. There’s also a coupon for free downloads. Awesome. Record Store Day is April 18th, at which point you will be able to buy this thing in (and only in) a real, actual record store. BE THERE!!

These Are Powers - “All Aboard Future” @ MBV
Not sure how I feel about the buttcheeks on the right, but I do like this cover art.  Hey, two cover art posts in a row!  Neat.

Really liking the above cover art for this David Rubato 12”.  Apparently the designer is a group/person called House of Kids.  I’d be curious to see more of their stuff — but I’m guessing these are the wrong kids.

Lovely cover art for this Populous With Short Stories album on Morr Music.  Morr continues to have one of the nicest house design styles of any label I know.

Awesome Tapes from Africa:

Senegalese hip-hop BANGERS. Well, at least tracks 1, 2 and 6. Anyone who raps that hardcore over a kora and an 808 gets high marks in my book (see track 5).

I love the internet!
