Repeat - Lilt-A

Super subtle aquatic electronica from the Plaid guys plus Mark Broom. Slightly more info here, and you can stream the rest of the album via this convenient YouTube playlist.

Cologne Tape - Render 4

And here’s a good thing I didn’t miss, thanks to the new allez-allez curated Bleep podcast. Very glad to see two of my most valued music discovery resources teaming up for this. And in the interest of passing on the knowledge, I should probably say that I can’t fully recommend buying this entire album, as I did. As nice as this track is, the rest doesn’t quite live up to it’s majesty. Definitely keeping an eye on these guys though. More info here, and a scan of the backside of the lovely artwork here.

Redinho “Pitter Patter” (buy me)

The clips I’ve heard from the rest of this EP sound a little bit too neon 8-bit for me, but man, how pretty is this song?  Reminds me of my favorite melancholy 90’s-IDM-but-really-almost-trance-if-you-think-about-it jam Forcasa 3 by Bola.

And while I’m linking there, I’d like to state for the record that I really love Remote Location’s design for the Numbers site.  Definitely one of the best label sites I’ve seen, and matches the Numbers vibe/art direction perfectly.

Max Tundra “Digital Love” (Daft Punk cover)

Kind of surprising how perfectly this Daft Punk track fits inside the Max Tundra aesthetic. Really lovely. Lots more rad covers here, including Missy Elliot, Paul McCartney (Coming Up!), and Hot Chip. And here’s my favorite Max Tundra original.

Joy Orbison “Hyph Mngo”

Bleep says:

‘Hyph Mngo’ (pronounce as you see fit) is a Hotflush transmission from 22 year old Londoner Peter O’ Grady, nephew of DnB hero Ray Keith. Its detroit warmth, its hypnotic, ghost addled groove, its soulful melee of 2-step, house, techno and jungle have given rise to talk of an anthem in the making…with just cause.

Yep, this is rad!

Bentley Rhythym Ace “Bentley’s Gonna Sort You Out”

Listened to the Bentley Rhythm Ace album on the way to work today, and it remains totally enjoyable. Loads of samples, lots of playfulness, and warmth. Makes me feel like I’m walking around a retro-futuristic Tokyo, sipping lemonade, on acid — that kind of thing. For those unfamiliar, these guys were one of the “electronica” “bands” Astralwerks put out in the mid/late-90’s (see also: Chemical Brothers, Air [French Band], Cassius, Tranquility Bass, QBurns Abstract Message, Freaky Chakra, Photek). I was all about this stuff back then, and really, still am. Some of it was lame, but some of it was really fun and catchy and melodic and good. BRA are definitely the latter.

Max Tundra - Which Song

This is totally great.

The Avalanches - Since I Left You (Cornelius Remix)

Did you know this existed?  Yeah, me neither!  And it’s good!  Apparently there’s a Stereolab mix too, which I’ll definitely be tracking down now.  There’s also a bunch of rad unreleases tracks and mixes up the Avalanches site, including a free download of their debut 7” from 1997.  1997?  I had no idea these guys had been around that long.

Mouse on Mars - Glim

Continuing on with the theme of mellow 90s electronica/IDM: I finally got around to listening to this old Mouse on Mars album I downloaded off eMusic a while back. It’s called Glam and apparently was originally written as a soundtrack for a movie that never came out. It’s quite ambient and soft, with little mechanical clicks and whirrs going off in pleasant, non-threatening directions. I still need to really dig into the MoM catalog, but to these non-expert ears this sounds like a comfortable mid-point betweens their earlier more melodic/ambient sound and their later experimental/noisy phase. Really nice stuff.
